It is not easy to find a new head coach for Bayern Munich to coach Kim Min-jae next season. He has already been rejected for the fourth time.

The Austrian Football Association announced on its official website on the 2nd (Korea Standard Time) that “Coach Ralf Rangnick will lead the 2024 European Football Championship (Euro 2024) in Germany in June and continue to serve as Austria’s head coach.”

Bayern Munich is one of the candidates to succeed Thomas Tuchel. As all other nominated coaches rejected their positions, some even said that Rangnick is highly likely to be appointed. Bayern Munich said to pay 10 million euros in compensation to the Austrian Football Association to bring Rangnick back.

However, Rangnick said, “I have decided to remain as a coach for the Austrian team. This job gives me great joy and I sincerely hope that our choice will lead to success. I will continue to work with the Austrian Football Association.”

Coach Rangnick expressed his expectations for Euro 2024. He added, “I want to focus entirely on Euro 2024. I will do my best to get as high as possible.”

Austrian Football Association President Klaus Mitor Ofer also said of Rangnick’s choice: “I am grateful to him for his decision to commit to the future,” and promised to “spare support so that we can all focus more on Euro 2024.”

As a professor, Rangnick boasts deep knowledge in tactics and philosophy. He started his career as a coach at SC Cove, and mainly worked for German Bundesliga clubs including Rotlingen, Stuttgart, Schalke 04, Hoffenheim, and Leipzig. Since then, he has worked as a sports director in Salzburg (Austria) and Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia).

Rangnick took charge of Manchester United (England) in December 2021 and coached the big clubs. He broke up with Manchester United after six months, but has been in charge of the Austrian team since June 2022 and has been doing well. In the Euro 2024 qualifying round, he was in Group F with formidable opponents such as Belgium and Sweden, but he made it to the final with six wins, one draw and one loss.

In addition, the team caused a stir by winning 2-0 in a friendly match against Germany in November last year. In March this year, the team won 2-0 in an away match against Slovakia and 6-1 at a home match against Turkiye. Since Rangnick’s inauguration, Austria has recorded 12 wins, three draws and five losses in 20 matches, and its FIFA ranking has risen from 34th to 25th.

Bayern Munich has been dropping out of the list of potential candidates one after another. Negotiations with Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach Xavi Alonso, German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, and former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane have all failed.
