‘Dream Tour Queen’ Moon Jung-min receives regular tour green… First win in 63rd tournament
Moon Jung-min , the “Dream Tour’s prize money king,” won the title in his 63rd tournament after his debut at the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour Daebo Housedy Open (total prize money of 1 billion won).
In the third and final third round of the championship held at Seowon Valley Country Club (par 72) in Paju, Gyeonggi Province on Sunday, Moon had seven birdies and three bogeys to post a 4-under 68. With a combined 9-under 207, Moon beat Ji Han-sol and Lee Joon-ee by a two-par margin to win the title.
After joining the KLPGA tour in 2021, Moon ranked 19th in the Dream Tour’s prize money rankings, and entered the regular tour the following year. After failing to adjust to the situation by ranking 75th in the first year of the tour, Moon also participated in both the regular and dream tours in 2023. In the regular tour, he failed to maintain the seed by ranking 90th in the prize money rankings, but won three games in the Dream Tour, and re-entered the tour this year.
Entering his fourth year, Moon has drawn new attention by displaying solid performance. In particular, he said he was impressed by his aggressive game with long balls flying more than 250 yards.
In 13 competitions in the first half of the year, he tied for fifth place in Doosan Match Play and sixth place in the Doosan E&C Weave Championship and BC Card Hankyung Ladies Cup, competing frequently.
Moon, who has displayed solid performance, suspended his tour activities due to personal reasons after finishing the BC Card Hankyung Ladies Cup in late June. Moon, who has not been on the tour for nearly two months, returned to the Hanwha Classic in late August.
Due to the suspension of tour activities for nearly two months during the season, the team’s performance was slow to recover. Starting with the Hanwha Classic and last week’s opening of OK Savings Bank’s Eatman, the team failed to make the cut in four consecutive competitions.
In this year’s championship, Moon started the race from the first day by reviving his aggressive performance he showed early in the season. Starting the first round tied for fourth, Moon rose to the lead in the second round and clasped the Gear Co. trophy in his arms on the last day.
Moon got off to a good start by making birdies at the third hole (par 3), but made consecutive bogeys at the fifth and sixth holes (par 4), shaking for a moment. However, he garnered birdies at the seventh hole (par 5), regaining the mood, and added birdies at the ninth hole (par 4) to spark competition for the title again.
In the second half, he displayed aggressive game management banking on his long shots. He shot his tee shot 276 yards at the 11th hole (par 5), and sent his second shot to the front of the green. He attached the ball, which he approached from a distance of 37 meters, to the 3.5 meters at the hole, and added a birdie putt to tie for the lead again. Afterwards, Moon grabbed consecutive birdies at the 12th hole (par 4) to rank No. 1, and added a birdie at the 14th hole (par 4) to secure a three-shot lead.
A bogey came out on the 15th hole (par 4), but Moon Jung-min, who birdied the 16th hole (par 5) and maintained a three-shot lead, recorded par in the remaining two holes to confirm his first career victory.
Ji Han-sol and Lee Joon-i shot a total of 7-under 209 to tie for second place, and Lee Ye-won, who tried to win her fourth win of the season, shot a total of 6-under 210 to finish the tournament tied for fourth with Jang Soo-yeon and Kim Soo-ji.
